CHAMBERLAIN, JOHN
was born on 16 April 1927, in Rochester, Indiana. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago (1951-52) and Black Mountain College, North Carolina, (1955-56). He is best known for creating sculptures from wrecked automobiles (or parts of) that bring the Abstract Expressionist style of painting into three dimensions. For his impressing way of creating he got many important awards (Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, Maine, 1993; Lifetime Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture, Washington, D.C., 1993; member of American Academy and Institute of Arts, New York, 1990; Distinction in Sculpture Honour, Sculpture Centre, New York, 1999).
